Navigating Return to Performance in Team Sport
The path to performance
Rehabilitation is often presented as a pathway.
Injury.
Recovery.
Return to participation.
Return to sport.
Return to performance.
Placed neatly beside one another, these stages make the process appear orderly and predictable. Complete one phase, move to the next, and eventually arrive back at performance.
But athletes rarely experience rehabilitation that way.
Progress is interrupted by symptoms, uncertainty, changing roles, reduced opportunities, difficult practices, and performances that don't immediately resemble what came before the injury.
The pathway may look linear on paper.
The experience rarely is.
Return to performance is not the final box in a rehabilitation plan. It is the journey that continues after the boxes stop.
The journey through complexity
In their recent paper, Taberner and colleagues use the children's book We're Going on a Bear Hunt as a metaphor for rehabilitation.
The characters repeatedly encounter obstacles they cannot avoid. They cannot go over them. They cannot go under them. They have to go through them.
Rehabilitation works much the same way.
The athlete encounters setbacks.
A flare in symptoms.
A plateau in strength.
Reduced minutes.
A new tactical role.
A coaching change.
A congested schedule.
A difficult first stretch of games.
These obstacles do not necessarily mean rehabilitation has failed. They are often an expected part of the process.
Success is not creating a perfectly linear rehabilitation.
Success is building a process that can adapt when the inevitable obstacles appear.
The authors describe return to performance as a dynamic, context-dependent journey rather than a single milestone. It is shaped by ongoing decision-making, progressive exposure, and the athlete's response to an ever-changing environment.
A detour is not always a setback. Sometimes it is simply the path forward.
Return to performance starts on day one
It's easy to think about return to performance as something that happens after return to sport.
Restore the injury.
Build strength.
Return to practice.
Return to games.
Then worry about performance.
But performance restoration begins much earlier than that.
The first conversations after injury influence expectations.
The rehabilitation plan determines which physical qualities are prioritized.
Communication between the athlete, coaching staff, medical team, and performance staff shapes the entire process.
Every decision either builds toward future performance or simply moves the athlete toward clearance.
Taberner and colleagues argue that the early stages of rehabilitation establish the foundation for the quality, durability, and sustainability of the athlete's eventual return. Return to performance shouldn't be an afterthought added at the end of rehabilitation—it should influence the plan from the very beginning.
You shouldn't wait until return to sport to start planning for return to performance.
Clearance changes the question
Before return to sport, the question is usually:
Can the athlete tolerate the next exposure?
After return to sport, the question changes:
Can the athlete tolerate, express, and repeatedly reproduce performance under competitive demands?
Those aren't the same question.
An athlete may be physically capable of participating while still lacking the capacity to sustain repeated high-speed efforts across an entire game.
They may regain strength yet still struggle to express it during chaotic, reactive situations.
They may be medically cleared while still rebuilding confidence, rhythm, and tactical awareness.
Clearance simply marks the point where meaningful exposure becomes possible.
It does not mean performance has been restored.
In fact, the authors describe return to sport as a critical transition rather than an endpoint. Athletes often return with modified roles, restricted minutes, and evolving confidence while performance continues to develop over time.
Return to sport permits exposure. Return to performance reflects what the athlete does with that exposure.
Performance requires both capacity and opportunity
Physical capacity remains the foundation of performance.
Athletes need to produce force.
Absorb force.
Repeat high-intensity efforts.
Recover between practices and games.
Tolerate the cumulative demands of competition.
Without these qualities, sustained performance becomes difficult.
But restoring physical capacity doesn't automatically restore performance.
Team sport is different.
Performance exists within an environment.
An athlete may be physically ready yet return to fewer minutes.
A teammate may have emerged during rehabilitation.
The team's tactical identity may have changed.
A new coach may ask the athlete to perform a different role.
The competitive standard may have evolved while the athlete was away.
Long-term rehabilitation removes an athlete from a moving environment. While they recover, teammates improve, coaches adjust tactics, and the game continues without them. The athlete isn't returning to the same team they left.
This matters when interpreting performance.
Lower statistical production doesn't automatically reflect reduced physical capacity.
Reduced running volume may reflect tactical deployment rather than physiological limitation.
The athlete needs both the ability to perform and the opportunity to express it.
Performance isn't determined by physical capacity alone. It emerges from the interaction between the athlete and the environment they return to.
The performance valley
One of the my favorite practical concepts discussed in the paper is what has been named the performance valley.
The athlete is back.
Capacity is there.
But performance remains inconsistent.
Minutes fluctuate.
Confidence continues to develop.
Training loads increase.
The athlete is learning to tolerate the demands of competition again.
This phase is especially common following severe injuries involving prolonged rehabilitation.
Research across multiple professional sports suggests athletes often experience reductions in participation, utilization, and performance during the first season after return, with some requiring multiple years to approach their previous level of contribution. Others never fully do.
That doesn't necessarily mean rehabilitation failed.
It may simply reflect that rehabilitation has entered its most complex phase.
Performance restoration isn't measured by the first game back.
It's measured by the athlete's ability to consistently contribute over time.
The first game back isn't the end of rehabilitation. It's the beginning of a new phase of it.
Measuring progress after return
Return to performance looks different depending on who's watching.
The athlete may value confidence, rhythm, and feeling like themselves again.
The coach values contribution, decision-making, and tactical execution.
Medical staff focus on durability, availability, and long-term health.
Performance staff monitor adaptation to training and competition.
The organization considers sustained contribution and long-term value.
None of these perspectives are wrong. But they often create different definitions of success. This is why monitoring cannot stop once the athlete returns to competition. The goal is no longer proving readiness. The goal is understanding adaptation.
How is the athlete responding to practices? Can they tolerate increasing competitive exposure? Are physical qualities being maintained? Is confidence improving? Is coaching trust growing?
Taberner and colleagues emphasize that longitudinal monitoring after return provides the context needed to answer these questions. Physical testing, workload data, athlete responses, and competitive performance all contribute to understanding how rehabilitation is progressing beyond clearance.

Before return, testing helps determine readiness. After return, it helps explain adaptation.
Return to performance is the journey, not necessarily a milestone
Return to performance isn't a moment. It's the ongoing process of restoring an athlete's ability to consistently contribute within an ever-changing competitive environment.
That process demands more than restoring physical capacity.
It requires preparing the athlete for the realities they'll encounter once they return to practice and competition.
The game doesn't pause while an athlete rehabilitates.
Roles change.
Teams evolve.
Opportunities shift.
The athlete must not only recover physically but continually adapt to the environment they're returning to.
That's why return to performance can never be reduced to a single test battery, one successful practice, or the first game back.
It's measured through sustained contribution over time.
The journey won't be perfectly linear.
There will be obstacles.
There will be detours.
There will be periods where progress seems slower than expected.
Those aren't necessarily signs that something has gone wrong.
They're often exactly what the journey looks like.
Return to sport gets athletes back into the game. Return to performance helps them matter once they're there.
Bringing it all together
Reading this paper reinforced something I believe is essential for return to performance in team sport. Performance doesn't suddenly appear once an athlete is cleared to compete. It is built progressively throughout rehabilitation.
That begins with the Foundation—developing the physical qualities that give an athlete the capacity to meet the demands of their sport. Without sufficient strength, power, force absorption, conditioning, and injury-specific capacities, there is no foundation on which performance can be restored.
From there comes the Ramp—a deliberate progression toward the demands of competition. Training volume, intensity, density, complexity, and workload are strategically increased so the athlete progressively builds the capacity to tolerate practices and games before competition becomes their first true exposure.
Finally, athletes need the Mechanism—the process of reintegrating into sport itself. Performance is built by performing. Athletes must progressively regain the technical skills, tactical understanding, decision-making, confidence, and rhythm required within their sport. They need meaningful exposure to teammates, opponents, and the dynamic environments that define competition. These qualities can't be fully recreated in the clinic or weight room—they develop through intentional participation in sport.
Viewed together, these concepts reflect the same message highlighted throughout this paper. Return to performance isn't achieved by restoring physical capacity alone, nor by simply returning an athlete to practice. It requires building the physical foundation, progressively exposing the athlete to the demands of competition, and deliberately reintegrating them into the sport where performance actually occurs.
The goal isn't simply to get athletes back onto the court or field. It's to help them become impactful once they're there.
Return to performance isn't built on the day of clearance. It's built through the Foundation, developed through the Ramp, and ultimately realized through the Mechanism—where athletes reconnect with the sport, the environment, and the performance they're working to reclaim.
