TOMMY OTLEY
I'm Tommy Otley, a physical therapist, sport scientist, educator, and researcher.
For nearly a decade, I've worked in elite basketball and high-performance sport alongside athletes, coaches, and performance staff, helping navigate the challenges of injury, rehabilitation, and performance. Those experiences have shaped not only my clinical practice, but also the questions that drive my thinking, the way I approach problem solving, and team systems.
The deeper I got into elite basketball and high-performance sport, the more I realized the importance of restoring impactful sport performance, not just returning athletes to sport. Many neglect this gap.
Through my expertise and research focused on return-to-performance, I help organizations and professionals overcome the performance gap by translating evidence, data, and real-world experience into practical strategies that can be applied within the realities of high-performance sport.
Whether through consulting, education, mentorship, or research collaboration, I help teams and practitioners improve communication across departments, develop more effective return-to-performance processes, integrate performance data into decision-making, and create systems that better support athlete performance and long-term development.

Working with Tommy was my first encounter with sports science.
Coming from overseas I did not have access to that type of technology and information. Being a player that works out a lot, working with Tommy allowed me to track my efforts and output of energy so that I could work efficiently and be at my peak physically when I needed it the most. Tracking my movement, jumps and accelerations also allowed me to modify my individual workouts to have the most control over my week and workload.

My research focuses on return-to-performance in team sport following injury, specifically how performance is defined, measured, and restored.
My work aims to develop evidence-informed frameworks that help teams and practitioners better evaluate and restore meaningful performance and impact in competition.
